The Children of the Pioneer Chairman of the Retired Primary School Teachers under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, NUP, Oyo State Council, late Comrade Michael Olagunju, have donated five million naira and a car to the union.
The presentation formed part of activities commemorating the 20th anniversary of Comrade Olagunju’s posthumous birthday, held at the NUP House, Agbarigo, Onireke, Ibadan.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Dr. Bolaji Olagunju disclosed that the family has committed to an annual donation of five million naira to serve as a scholarship fund for 100 students connected to the union.
He explained that the fund would be disbursed every year on their late father’s birthday to support beneficiaries in furthering their education.
Dr. Olagunju who thanked the retired primary school teachers for honouring his father two decades after his passing, described the recognition as rare and deeply appreciated by the family.
In his remarks, the State Chairman, Comrade Dosu Akinpelu, described the late Olagunju as a visionary and dedicated leader whose legacy continues to inspire members of the union and commended the children for their generosity.
Comrade Akinpelu assured the family that both the cash donation and the vehicle would be judiciously used for the purposes intended.
Earlier, the NUP Secretary, Comrade Olusegun Abatan, announced that a foundation to be known as the “Pa Olagunju Scholarship Foundation” would be established to manage the fund.
He said the foundation would ensure that deserving children, particularly those in tertiary institutions, benefit from the scholarship.
Comrade Abatan also urged teachers to always prioritise the education of their children.
