Stakeholder to Youths, Leverage on partnership with Genuine Leaders for better society

Capacity building and involvement have been described as the vital tools that could break the barrier among the generations.

This formed part of the submission of the major speakers at the grand finale of this year’s international youth week, organized by the National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYC, Oyo State chapter held at the American corner, Jericho Ibadan.

Speaking at the occasion, Oyo state commissioner for youth and sports development, Seun Fakorede, said, if the millennium and younger generations must experience a beautiful nation they should cultivate the habit of inclusiveness and do away with sentiment, segregation and discrimination.

He said “If there is any task that someone who is actually a youth can do and qualified for, let us give it to him but at the same time, don’t let us give somebody an assignment and we know that he’s not capable but only thing he has to offer is am a youth’. No, that is sentiment and that is just an emotion, so if there is a situation whereby an assignment is here and we don’t even have any youth to complete them and there is older or elderly person who can actually do it well, why not, let us give it to them.”

In her goodwill message, the Executive Secretary, Oyo state Agency for Youth development, Alhaja A. Ó Adégbolá, enjoined Youth to be tolerant, unite, patriotic and good citizens, shun anti-social behavior as well as use their PVCs judiciously when the needs come.

She reiterated “We don’t need violence, all we need is to showcase ourselves to the government either at the local, state or at the national level. As we all know, the general election is fast approaching, let’s have our say, don’t let politicians use us as political thug in this political season.”

On his part, former Chairman, NYC, Comrade Seun Onifade, who was the keynote speaker, challenged the council to come up with robust policy that can override government policies that are affecting the development and progress of the youth.

He said “I remember those days, when we talk about youth unemployment, poverty, inadequacy, lack of opportunities, no youth youth in governance, which are still the same issues we are still facing today, when we look at holistically, in the past eight years we have seen those people coming up governance but what do we have, several councils of women society today are asking for 35% affirmative actions, i want to ask young people, what are you asking for, is 10%, 40%, we don’t have any policy to engage government, and we want those in power to discus to us, nobody will listen with with you”

He also urged youth to stop making themselves political tools to the actualization of political actors’ dreams.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman, National Youth Council of Nigeria, Oyo State chapter, Comrade Abdul-Quadri Abdul Salam, said youth should participate meaningfully in the politics if they want to be part of the policy makers.

According to him “The discrimination is too much and the youth have to get involve, as we are planning to get involve let’s have a positive mind, let change the narrative. When we join the race, we can’t just sit down and be complaining of bad governance without taking a step, with those steps we can participate in the leadership positions. Let’s see it as a point of duty. As the election is approaching, have we all collected our PVCs, don’t let us just use it for opening of bank account alone but let’s participate in the election process”

Highlight of the event were symposium, investiture and interaction which was graced by, youth from all the geopolitical zones of the state, past Executives of the NYC council and government officials.
