Oyo Education Sector: Media Experts Call for Action

Media Professionals have been challenged to do more in ensuring transparency and accountability in the Oyo State education sector towards effective result oriented outputs.

A Media Consultant and Head of Programmes, Splash FM, Ibadan Mr Oluwaseun Akinola gave the challenge at a two day capacity building for Media on Transparency and Accountability in the Education Sector organised by EDUCATION AS A VACCINE initiative in collaboration with Malala Fund Champions Nigeria and other partners held in Ibadan.

Speaking on “The Role of Media in Promoting Transparency and Accountability in Education Sector reportage , Mr Akinola said the state of education in Oyo state has been deteriorating over the years, due to the neglect by the media to play its role in holding government accountable amidst growing number of out of school children, decayed infrastructure and poor budget implementation.

The media expert however charged journalists in the state to wake up to their responsibilities at ensuring that the education sector receives all necessary attention from the government and stakeholders.

On her part, a representative of the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Abuja, Mrs. Anthonies Okanibe, called for synergy among media outfits in the state, in order for transparency and accountability in governance especially education sector.
Earlier, the Programme Officer, Education as a Vaccine, Kaduna, Ms. Mercy Abalaku said the essence of the workshop was to train media personnel on creating effective content on transparency and accountability reportage, especially in the area of education in the state through investigative journalism, fact checking and data analysis.

Group Work and presentations on action plans on the role of media in promoting transparency and accountability in the state formed part of the event.

Among the media professionals at the capacity building programme with the theme “Empowering the Media, Enhancing Transparency was the General Manager of Pensioners FM, Dr Babatunde Tiamiyu.
