As the world marks the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) 2025, Trailblazer Initiative Nigeria (TBI) has reiterated its unwavering commitment to the total elimination of FGM and the protection of the rights and dignity of women and girls in Nigeria.
In a statement signed by the Executive Director, Trailblazer Initiative Nigeria, Dr. Dare Olagoke-Adaramoye, said that FGM remains a significant violation of human rights, affecting millions of women and girls across the globe.
He said that despite sustained efforts to eradicate the practice, FGM continues due to entrenched cultural beliefs, misinformation, and social pressure.
The consequences of FGM are severe, leading to lasting physical, emotional, and psychological trauma for survivors. “According to this year’s theme, “Stepping Up the Peace: Strengthening Alliances and Building Movements to End FGM,” highlights the necessity of collective action in tackling this deeply rooted issue.
Dr. Adaramoye explained that achieving zero tolerance for FGM requires a collaborative, multi-sectoral approach involving traditional leaders, policymakers, health professionals, and civil society organizations.
He stressed further that by working together, these stakeholders can help dismantle harmful traditions, enforce protective legislation, and educate communities about the dangers of FGM.
“Trailblazer Initiative Nigeria is actively engaging in advocacy efforts to raise awareness and push for the strict implementation of anti-FGM laws.
Adaramoye calls for increased government intervention, improved legal frameworks, and community-driven initiatives to accelerate the eradication of the practice. “”On this International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM, we call on governments, organizations, and individuals to step up efforts in ending this harmful practice. The time for action is now—together, we can build a future where every girl is free to live, thrive, and achieve her dreams without fear of mutilation, he concluded”.
