Shittu Emerges President as Oyo Labour Veterans Elect New Officers

The Oyo State Labour Veterans Association has elected a new set of officers to pilot the affairs of the association.

The election took place during the Association’s 2nd Biennial Annual General Meeting held on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Teachers Resource Centre, Samonda, Ibadan.

At the meeting, Comrade Joseph Kehinde Shittu emerged as President alongside other executive committee members, all of whom were elected unopposed by members of the association following the expiration of the tenure of the pioneer executive committee led by former Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Oyo State Chapter, Comrade Ibrahim Bolomope.

The emergence of the new executive committee was described as a significant milestone in the history of the association, marking the conclusion of the pioneer leadership’s tenure and the beginning of a new direction for the body over the next two years.

In his farewell address, the pioneer President of the association, Comrade Bolomope, described members of the association as individuals who emerged from years of struggles and sacrifices within the labour movement during their active service in the public and civil service.

He explained that the association was established to provide a platform for retired and veteran labour leaders to continue making meaningful contributions to the growth, stability, and advancement of the trade union movement across various sectors.

According to him, the association also serves as a bridge between past and present labour leaders by offering guidance, mentorship, and the sharing of valuable experiences and ideals aimed at strengthening labour administration and advocacy.

Speaking on the conduct of the election, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Comrade Bashiru Lamidi Apapa, said the process was smooth and transparent.

He noted that no position was contested, as all aspirants were duly nominated and screened in line with the provisions of the association’s constitution before being presented to members for affirmation through voice votes.

In his acceptance speech, the newly elected President, Comrade Shittu, pledged to uphold the integrity, unity, and founding ideals of the association, while working closely with other members of the executive committee to sustain its relevance within the labour movement.

He appealed for the continued support and cooperation of members to enable the new leadership to effectively deliver on its mandate.

The other newly elected executive committee members are: Comrade Elijah Olu Abiala, Vice President; Comrade Olugbemiga Obabiyi, Secretary; Comrade Lukman Balogun, Assistant Secretary; Comrade Patrick Adewale Araba, Treasurer; Comrade Morenike Babatunde, Financial Secretary; Comrade Cosmas Olalekan Oni, Public Relations Officer; Comrade Rukayat Adebunmi Afonja, Welfare Officer; Comrade Olusegun Aboke, Auditor; and Comrade Remi Adediji, Legal Adviser.
