Reported Handshake Snub Between Olubadan, Alaafin Sparks Public Reactions

A notable protocol incident involving two of Oyo State’s foremost traditional rulers has become a topic of discussion following the 2026 Inter-Faith Gathering in Ibadan organised by the state government.

Eyewitness indicate that the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, extended a hand in greeting toward the newly arrived Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja. The Olubadan, however, did not reciprocate the handshake.

The Olubadan had earlier gone to greet Governor Seyi Makinde where he was sitted.

The development has sparked analysis among observers of traditional and political affairs in the state.

While some commentators view the moment as a significant breach of customary public courtesy between monarchs, others advise caution, noting the intricate and often unwritten rules governing royal engagements and precedence.

The incident has brought the dynamics within the state’s traditional hierarchy into renewed focus.

Neither palace has issued a official statement on the exchange, leaving the interpretation to the court of public opinion and cultural analysts.
