Media Experts Seek Support for Rule of Law, Reforms

Speakers at a Media Transformative Group Summit held at the American Corner, Jericho, Ibadan, have emphasized the need for Nigerians to uphold the rule of law, embrace civic responsibility, and support the ongoing reforms of President Bola Tinubu for national progress.

The summit, themed “Nigeria @65: Rule of Law, Systemic ProblemThe Way Forward,”* brought together government officials, media professionals, traditional rulers, and civil society actors to discuss pathways to good governance and national development.

In his keynote address, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, Mr. Sunday Dare, appealed for patience and understanding from Nigerians, noting that the President’s reforms were already yielding results through improved accountability, discipline, and restructuring of the nation’s anti-corruption framework.

Mr. Dare also reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to judicial independence and access to justice, disclosing that the Federal Ministry of Justice and the Nigerian Law Reform Commission are working to review outdated laws dating back to the colonial era.

Deputy Director of News and Current Affairs, FRCN Ibadan, Mr. Adewumi Faniran, stressed that the rule of law must prevail irrespective of individuals’ status or influence.

Sabiganna of Iganna Land, Oba Saliu Oyemonla, called for positive attitudinal change among citizens to complement government efforts.

In a panel discussion, the Chief Press Secretary to the Oyo State Governor, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, alongside human rights activists Dr. Oluwakemi Aremu and Mr. Jide Olowoyo, urged that laws be applied uniformly and that justice should serve all citizens without discrimination.

Also contributing, a journalist Mr. Olufemi Olukunle advocated improved welfare and remuneration for media practitioners, noting that a motivated press remains a vital pillar of democracy.

Convener of the summit and General Manager of Pensioners FM, Ibadan, Dr. Babatunde Tiamiyu, said the Media Transformative Group was established to promote professionalism, ethical standards, and healthy competition among broadcast organizations in Ibadan.

The event was attended by dignitaries including a representative of the National Orientation Agency, Mrs. Ajolayo Akande, and retired Deputy Director of News and Current Affairs, FRCN Ibadan, Mr. Samson Tunde Abiodun.
