Obasanjo Calls for Interfaith Unity to Foster Peace, National Harmony

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has called for interfaith unity across the country towards promoting peace, love, and harmony for a greater Nigeria.

Chief Obasanjo, who was the thematic speaker, made the remarks while delivering his keynote address at the 2025 United Nation World Interfaith Harmony Week Conference and Awards, held in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital.

Speaking on the theme “the love of the good, and the love of the neighbors,” “Peace for Our Time,” the former president urged Nigerians of all faiths to set aside their differences and work together to overcome the nation’s challenges.

The one time head of state also emphasized that peace and unity are essential in building a stronger and more prosperous nation.

Chief Obasanjo, who was also honored with the title of Apostle of Peace at the event, further stressed the critical role of faith-based organizations in shaping societal values and fostering cooperation among different groups.

Also speaking, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Yakubu Dogara, who was represented by a former federal and state lawmaker, Hon Timothy Golu urged Nigerians to harness their skills and humanity to create a society where every individual can live with dignity, pride, and peace.

Honourable Dogara called on Nigerians to continue to remain hopeful for a brighter future, one in which peace reigns supreme across the nation.

In a remark, veteran broadcast journalist, Dr. Yemi Farounbi emphasised on the need for politicians to do away with the practice of using religion as a divisive tool for personal ambition.

Dr. Farounbi who is also a former Nigeria Ambassador to the Philippines warned against what he called dare – consequences of creating disharmony among various faiths for political gains.

The event also featured a public presentation of a book titled “Reviving Values” a blueprint for tertiary institution written by a Pensioners FM’s current affairs analysts, Honourable Femi Adebisi marking a significant moment in the celebration of peace and interfaith dialogue.
