US Imposes Travel Ban on Nigerians, Suspends Entry for Several Visa Categories

The United States government has imposed a fresh travel ban on Nigerian nationals, suspending their entry into the country under multiple immigrant and non-immigrant visa categories, *Premium Times* has reported.

According to the report by *Premium Times*, the decision was announced by the White House in an official statement, which confirmed that **Nigerians will no longer be eligible for entry into the United States as immigrants or under several commonly used non-immigrant visas**.

The affected non-immigrant visa categories include **B-1 (business), B-2 (tourism), B-1/B-2 (combined business and tourism), F (academic students), M (vocational students), and J (exchange visitors)**. The suspension also applies to immigrant visas, effectively blocking most legal pathways for Nigerians seeking to enter the US for education, tourism, business, or permanent residency.

The US government explained that the decision was based on **security and immigration management concerns**, particularly challenges associated with **identity verification, vetting procedures, and high visa overstay rates** among Nigerian applicants. The White House noted that Nigeria’s current security environment, including the activities of extremist groups and other criminal elements, makes it difficult for US authorities to reliably assess visa applicants.

While announcing the restrictions, US officials maintained that the measures are part of broader efforts to strengthen national security and protect the integrity of the country’s immigration system. The administration added that countries affected by the ban may be reviewed periodically, depending on improvements in information-sharing, identity management, and compliance with US immigration requirements.

As reported by *Premium Times*, the ban has sparked concerns among Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, particularly students, professionals, and families with pending visa applications. Many are awaiting clarification on possible exemptions, waivers, or timelines for a policy review.

The development marks another significant shift in US immigration policy toward Nigeria and is expected to have far-reaching implications for education, travel, business relations, and family reunification between both countries.
