Uphold ethics, remain gatekeepers of truth — Sonde Charges Journalists

The Chief Executive Officer of YES FM, Ibadan, Mr. Yemi Sonde, has called on journalists to maintain integrity and uphold their responsibility as gatekeepers of truth in the face of growing concerns over fake news.

Delivering a lecture entitled “Fake News and Media Integrity” at a media forum organised by the Department of Mass Communication, Dominican University, Samonda, Ibadan, Mr. Sonde urged journalists and media professionals to remain committed to ethical standards of the profession. Mr. Sonde also encouraged aspiring journalists to embrace ethical reporting as they prepare to join the media industry.

Chairman on the occasion and former Editor with the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria FRCN, Barrister Steven James, described the lecture as an eye-opener for students and insight into the societal damage caused by fake news.

Earlier, Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Dominican University, who is an Associate Professor, Ifeanyi Onyike, said the lecture was organised to counter the perception that media platforms are tools for spreading disinformation and misinformation, and to provide students with an opportunity to engage directly with seasoned media practitioners.

Present at the event were General Manager of Pensioners FM, Dr. Babatunde Tiamiyu and Deputy Director New Media, Radio Nigeria Ibadan, Dr Sola Agboola.
