Anthony Joshua’s Family Opposes Prosecution of Driver after Fatal Crash

In a surprising turn of events, the family of Nigerian-born boxing star Anthony Joshua has opposed the decision to prosecute the driver involved in the recent car crash that left the former world heavyweight champion injured and claimed the lives of two of his close associates.

The driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, had earlier appeared before a court in Sagamu, Ogun State, in connection with the incident, which occurred on 29 December 2025 in south-west Nigeria.

Kayode was behind the wheel of a Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and two members of his team—Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami—when the vehicle reportedly collided with a stationary truck.

He is facing charges of reckless driving and driving without a valid licence.

The court appearance was brief, as the presiding judge adjourned the case until 25 February following an application by the prosecution. Observers said the defendant appeared subdued, dressed in black trousers and a hooded sweatshirt, and avoided journalists as he entered and exited the courtroom.

Speaking on behalf of the boxer’s family, Joshua’s uncle, Adedamola Joshua, said the family was grateful that the former two-time heavyweight champion survived the crash but questioned the need for legal action.
“We are fortunate that our son did not die,” he said.

“But taking this man to court is something we see no reason for. Accidents can happen anywhere in the world.”

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) disclosed that preliminary investigations indicated the vehicle was speeding and suffered a burst tyre before crashing into the truck.
Police confirmed that Ayodele and Ghami died at the scene, while Joshua and Kayode sustained minor injuries.

Ghami was Joshua’s long-time strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele served as his personal trainer.
Meanwhile, Joshua has reportedly been sighted back in the gym, sparking speculation about a possible return to the ring after his recovery.
